It presents art exhibitions, theater and dance performances, concerts, and many others. It is one of the few institutions funded by the federal government as so-called "lighthouses of culture."
It was formerly known as the Kongresshalle conference hall, a gift from the United States, designed in 1957 by the American architect Hugh Stubbins Jr. John F. Kennedy spoke here during his June 1963 visit to West Berlin. On May 21, 1980 the roof collapsed killing one and injuring numerous people. The hall has been rebuilt in its original style and reopened in 1987 at the 750 years jubilee of Berlin. To Berliners it is also known as the Schwangere Auster - the pregnant oyster.

Every day, some 1100 long-distance, regional and rapid transit trains call at the 14 platforms on two different levels. The Hauptbahnhof, formerly the site of Lehrter Bahnhof, is Berlin's Central Station. It began full operation two days after a ceremonial opening on 26 May 2006. It is now Europe's largest two-level railway station.

The current Chancellery building - opened in the spring of 2001 - was designed by Charlotte Frank and Axel Schultes from concrete and glass in an essentially postmodern style, though some elements of modernist style are evident. It is one of the largest government headquarters buildings in the world. By comparison, the new Chancellery building is eight times the size of the White House.
